The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a warning letter to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) for "misuse of the 'oral' medicine tablets" when prescribing certain aciclovir tablets. A summary of the MHRA’s recent actions against the manufacturer of the aciclovir tablets:
MHRA: 1. Warned that the tablets are not recommended for use in children. 2. Warned that: • the tablets are not suitable for use in patients under 16 years of age (unless recommended by a doctor). • The tablets may be unsafe for use in patients who have ever had an allergic reaction to other medicines or other medicines on the market.
A statement from the MHRA regarding the risks of taking these tablets "reminds patients of the risks and benefits of using oral aciclovir tablets", and the warning letter to the MHRA from the Department of Health. Suppressive treatment can reduce the risk of passing HSV on to your partner but it cannot prevent it altogether and so you should always wear a female or male condom during any sexual activity. If you are experiencing recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes you should also consider being tested for HIV as it may be a sign of a weakened immune system due to HIV.Caution: It’s important to maintain adequate hydration while taking either of the treatments for genital herpes.
